Latest Apple iPhone iOS 14 Specification

Customisable Widgets:

iOS 14 comes with a fresh-looking set of Widgets. They can now be of varying sizes and are full of rich data. You can also place your Widgets on your Home Screen, replacing the Today View. All you need to do is drag-and-drop. Adding to the Widgets customisable feature, you can place widgets of the same size on top of each other creating a “Smart Stack.” This will make your iPhone suggest the display of widgets in the stack front-and-centre theme. You can also opt to swipe through them as per your liking. You can view all your available widgets in the Widget Gallery from native Apple apps to third-party apps that support iOS widgets.

Picture-in-Picture:

This is a feature that I have been waiting for a very long time. iOS14 now supports Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allowing you to watch a video even when you swipe back to the Home screen, without you having to pause your stop your video. A point worth mentioning here is that this feature is possible only on those apps that allow the PiP feature.

App Library:

Located at the end of the home screen swipe, it is a new feature that helps you organise your home screen in a much efficient manner. It does this by automatically organising home screen pages on the basis of category. You can also hide the entire app pages if required. Furthermore, it also suggests an app search folder along with a recently added folder. To make our lives easier, Apple has also included features that have a full list of installed apps that are sorted alphabetically and allow you to apply a criteria to find what you require promptly.

Compact UI:

An aspect that I really like is that the latest iOS makes the entire user interface much compact and relevant. Siri or phone calls do not occupy the entire screen.
Interactive Group Messaging: iOS14 allows you to reply to a specific message in group chats with in-line replies and mentions. A feature that I believe will add much convenience to group messaging. Group members who have been recently active also have a larger contact photo.

Choosing your Email and Browser:

A feature that I believe should have been enabled much earlier is the ability to choose your default web browser and email client. This is to be enabled in the third-party app’s settings and functions only if the developer of the app has supported the feature.

Enhanced HomeKit:

You can now experience Adaptive lighting while using HomeKit enabled accessories and lights. This allows you to automatically adjust the colour temperature throughout the day. iOS14 also brings on-device Face Recognition to HomeKit, allowing your compatible video cameras and doorbells to recognise your family and friends. Imperative to mention here that the HomeKit and Home app are structured to be secure and private resulting in all the information being end-to-end encrypted.

Translate:

iOS14 users will be able to experience a brand new app called Translate. It allows you to view both sides of the conversation by turning your phone into landscape orientation and split it in half. This features two translation modes voice translation and text translation in 11 languages; English, Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic to name a few.

Siri:

One can see a much compact UI Siri in iOS14. It appears as a small overlay on the app that you are accessing or using. It can also now send audio messages, send ETAs, and get cycling directions.

Faster AirPods Functionality:

AirPods are now able to switch faster thanks to automatic device switching in iOS14. Furthermore, they also get spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.

Health:

With consumers becoming more health-conscious and relying on health apps, iOS 14 has added a customised Sleep Schedule while allows you to set a sleep goal and create a daily bedtime schedule and time to wake up. The upgraded Health also has a Health Checklist that is a centralised place for managing all safety and health features.

Maps:

Apple Maps have always been compared to Google Maps and let me tell you iOS14 has significantly enhanced Apple’s Maps. It displays more flyovers, a Guide feature that recommends the best places to explore in your vicinity. It also shows Congestions Zones and Green Zones which reflect the traffic flow of a location and recommends alternative routes.

Privacy:

True to Apples’ character of taking user data privacy extremely seriously, the updated iOS provides more transparency to its user when it comes to their privacy. Users can find a new Privacy Information section for each app on the App Store. You can choose to provide only your closest location instead of your exact location thanks to the new Approximate Location. Recording indicators are also available when apps use the camera, device mic, or both. Furthermore, for apps that require your permission to access your Photo Library, you now have the option of selecting specific photos.

iOS14 is available on a range of Apple devices and I must say that it gives a bunch of much-awaited features to Apple users across the globe.
